Malaysia’s Top 10

These are the Malaysian Top 10 active players:-

So far it looks like Mas and Yee Weng are the only ones who have rated games since the last update.
One surprise (at least for me) is that FM Peter Long might be back on fourth position in the list if his games in the recent ASEAN Mix [...]

National Rating DB up

Ok I took a good hour to get the Excel data Tse Pin published into my web database. Getting rusty since I’m just modifying old codes. Since I’m leaving my company I can tell you that a simple application like this can cost RM 2,000 - RM 3,000 easily. At least that’s what the company [...]

National Rating List is out !!

I know. I know. Tse Pin has already released it days earlier but I needed the time to add the data into a web database so you can check online. However I found many inconsistencies in the spelling of names. It’s a difficult thing to make sure people spell their names the same way [...]

No longer 1700

As I feared 1700 rating is a little over inflated and it lasted only 2 days. Those lucky games should not count. Also, many lost games from bullet also contributed in pulling the overall rating down
I guess my real overall strength is probably only 1600+ at the moment. 200 points to go!… [...]

1700 at last

Reached 1700 at last. I have to admit I cheated a bit by picking players that I was confident of beating. I relied too much on my opponent falling into my cheap trick variations in bullet games. I scored 3 lucky wins against higher rated opponents in my standard (20 mins) games.

Still it looks nice [...]

Up, Down, like a Yo Yo

That’s part of a lyric from a song I listened to when I was a teenager. (anybody know the title?)
It’s also best describes my WCN rating these past few weeks.
I am still trying hard to reach the elusive 1800 rating. That target will still be the main objective this month but I think l’ll [...]

WCN Rating - Bullet is rubbish?

I want to put more emphasis on Blitz (5/10 min) and Standard (20/30 min). But psychologically I just couldn’t leave my bullet rating lying low at 1500. So you guessed it. I played more bullets and managed to make my rating fall to 1400+
I improved on Standard and bullet ratings though. Even then, [...]

1600 and rising

Previously I only had a rating of 1333 for my standard. I really hate to play in time controls that are more than 5 minutes because there is a tendency that you will be pitting your skills against a computer engine.
Last night I had no choice and had to play more standard time control (20 [...]

Plateau at 1500

Seems like my rating has levelled off at around 1547. I guess that should be more or less my current strength now.
Now it’s time to bookup and repair much of my opening weakness. I found some common questions to certain variations. Chessbase has this great feature in generating opening reports with statistics and best lines. [...]

Ouch! Drop in National Rating

This morning I opened an email from Lim Tse Pin with the latest National Rating List for July 2006.
I uploaded that to the National Rating List webpage and was disappointed to see the drop in my rating.
I guess it’s not surprising after some recently disastrous results.

Improvement in bullet rating

Finally reached my desired 1500 rating at WCN
Like I said, it won’t help me for tomorrow’s Selangor Open with classical time control. However I’m happy that I’ve polished my opening a bit. So at least if I lose in the Selangor Open, it will not (hopefully) be because of my opening Continue reading

World Chess Network rating graph

One of the cool features I like about WCN is the rating graph. I especially like the multiple ratings for 3 different time controls such as bullet, blitz and standard. Last year WCN only had one overall rating no matter what time control you chose to play.
I like the fact that I can visually [...]
