Dell Mini 9 + Maxis worth it?

This is just my personal opinion and I say nay.
For a total or RM 2376 it is NOT worth it for me. Also take note that the Maxis broadband that is included is only for six (6) months.
I’d rather buy the Dell Mini 9 separately at RM… Continue reading | 1 Comment

Dell Vostro 1310

Another 13.3 inch from Dell and they more or less look pretty much standard by now. The specs are not too impressive but for basic work and chess I think it’s more than enough.
Also at around RM 2000+ it’s getting competitive to the popular netbook prices like the Asus EEE PC.

Asus EEE PC + Digi Edge promo + Fritz = Patzer Dream Gadget

This ultraportable notebook from Asus has certainly been making headlines last year and I read about it on top review sites like CNet.com. It hit Malaysian shores early this year and looks like it has a warm reception especially by the geek community.
As a chess patzer I’m attracted to it for [...]

Dell continues bundling XP via loophole

Officially Microsoft is supposed to retire the XP operating system come June 2008. That means computer manufacturers like Dell, Acer, Compaq etc cannot bundle XP into the computers and notebooks that they sell.
However as you know, Vista is far from perfect and many people are having problems with running older software and missing software drivers [...]

Asus Eee PC alternative

For some time I really liked the portability of the Asus Eee PC. For those who don’t know, this Asus notebook model is around RM 1500 and very small and portable. The screen is only 7 inch!

It’s been somewhat successful internationally and I’ve seen some Malaysians buying the Eee PC.
So it’s not surprising other companies [...]

Patzer Dell Notebook (640M) Battery dying

Last month, my Dell 640m notebook started showing the above message every time I boot up.
It’s already showing signs of dying off. Pretty disappointing as it is only 14 months since I bought the notebook. I thought these notebook batteries should at least last 2-3 years before giving out. Anyway battery life… Continue reading | [...]

So thin it can fit in an envelope

This is one of the notebooks some chess players will dream about. The notebook is so thin, it can fit in an envelope! It’s the Macbook Air.Price: USD 1799.Yeah it’s a little expensive, but that’s to be expected from the world thinnest notebook.Weighing only 3 pounds it would be convenient to make this a professional chess [...]

Dell Vostro 1200

Dell Vostro 1200. I like this new model because it is an ultraportable with a 12.1 inch TFT Truelife monitor. With it’s battery it weighs only 1.9 kg. It’s pretty cheap too for an 12.1 inch notebook at RM  2,448. The only thing I don’t quite like is probably the Windows Vista® Home Basic [...]

Patzer Notebook Upgrade

It’s exactly a year now that I’ve used my Patzer Notebook - a Dell 640M 1Gb RAM Core Duo notebook. I’m pretty happy with it as it has been a great help to my work in doing my websites and also building chess apps like ChessPublisher.com.
The only niggling thing I want is a longer [...]

Dell releases The Beast

Ok this is probably an overkill for a notebook for the chess player. But then again it’s cheaper than the configuration I played around for the Dell GM Notebook (RM 12,887.00). Starting price for the basic system is RM 7999 which comes with  comes pre-configured with an Intel® Coreâ„¢ [...]

Patzer Harddisk Full

I rarely delete stuff off my hard disk. I keep a lot of materials like articles, program codes, open source libraries downloaded from the web. I do periodic backups but I can never reformat the hard disk because it was always at least 50% filled with some data. Today I’ve decided to backup 100% of [...]

Patzer Notebook update

Ever since I got my notebook last year I have not fully used it to improve my chess performance.
Sure I’ve got ChessBase, CT-Art, Fritz, Rybka and Chess Assistant installed but these are hardly used. The reason for this was that I’ve used it more for writing paid post and setting up new websites. It’s a [...]

Importance of Notebooks to a chess player

One of my regrets in the recent DATMO was not finding out what types of notebook did the top players use for their in between round preparation. Even in the first DATMO, I already heard from GM Ian Rogers that many of the GMs cannot do without their notebooks.
The DATMO champ, Li Chao came to [...]

Patzer Notebook update

Yeah this patzer has already got his Dell 640m. But Dell just released a slew of new models which is pretty cool looking.
It’s the Vostro series and for the first time Dell is paying attention to looks. An all black Dell notebook looks really nice.
Of course like all electronic gadgets, over time the notebook specs [...]

Patzer Notebook - cleanup

Right after I got my first notebook a few months ago, I installed Ubuntu. It’s a very nice distribution of Linux because it is pretty friendly and easy to use especially to a Linux newbie like me. Backup and Reformat

It’s a holiday today but I’m not going to the 34th Royal Selangor today. Main reason is I’ve fallen behind on my thousand dollar experiment even though I met the target in the first week.
First order of business is to clear off this patzer’s notebook of rubbish and crap that is slowing everything down. [...]
