I know I say that we go to tournaments “just for fun”. However most of us who say that harbour ill intentions towards our opponents during the game itself
We want to destroy our opponents ego. Wipe that smile from his face. Show that his moves are utter nonsense. We want to embarrass them. We want to kill their character over the board.
No wonder Kasparov once said he has “blood on his hands”. Chess is definitely NOT a friendly game. That’s how I feel in most serious tournments.
Today, however, I really enjoyed the socialising aspect of the tourney. And that’s not because I lost 3 games.
I got to know Michael Siong and discuss about interesting things about chess. It was only a few months ago when my most popular blog article here was titled “Who is Michael Siong ?”. At that time I was fishing for more info on this chess player from Singapore. Hard to believe that we are now chess friends. This is saying a lot for someone like me who is so introverted and shy. Chess has definitely changed me.
Also got to meet interesting people from other profession. For example, I met a designer who took part in a chess event for the first time in many years. She was very raw and inexperienced and lost to me easily. Still I admire people like that. I can see how scared she was when she asked me whether I was a national player or not.Also wanted to find a chess coach to improve.I really hated to beat her too terribly not because she was a female chess player. I just didn’t want my game to be the reason a chess newbie like her to stops coming to these tourneys.I tried to make the loss as painless to her (if that is even possible
)
In short, my chess training has been somewhat ineffective as my middlegame still stinks. Obviously 4 exercises a day is too little. I’ll have to read up more books as well as drill myself with more tactical and strategical chess puzzles. I’m on my way back in a bus so I’ll continue more later when I can get to a PC…
