Thousand Dollar Experiment - Final Results
I started the thousand dollar experiment
a month ago to see if it is possible to earn RM1,000 entirely from blogging.
The aim of this experiment was purely for selfish gains, i.e. to buy myself a reasonably good camera so I can take better pictures at chess tournaments. ![]()
Here is the final results. (drumrolls…)
Week 4 results
|
Week 1 = RM 263.39
Week 2 = RM 208.49
Week 3 = RM 226.30
Week 4 = RM 403.07
*******************
Total = RM 1101.25

Success!! After 4 weeks the amount earned is RM100 above the target!! This thing about making money via blogging really works. I know, I know, people like LiewCF, 5xmom, Alang have made it a long time ago, but I just needed to see it for myself.
I am happy because it is the biggest amount I have ever got just by blogging.
I didn’t even add the amount from Text-Link-Ads and NuffNang (total about RM 70) because I consider the payment to be confirmed only at the end of this month. (It’s now only the middle of the month)
I have to thank the readers here for being patient with all the additional sponsored posts and ads appearning on this blog.
Only one bad news. I won’t see the money until perhaps in 2-3 months time because of overseas bank cheques as well as time needed to setup an account to widthdraw from Malaysia. So no camera yet for tournaments within these 3 months
All this has inspired me to continue with my older blogs on different topics such as gadgets, programming etc to bring in more online revenue. I will blog about it to share my experience, not here, but in my personal blog AndrewOoi.com.
Here’s what I’ve learnt:-
1. From the low amount made from Google Adsense I can only deduce that the quality of my writing is not attracting many readers. I have to look for and write more quality content. I always see a boost in Adsense revenue when there is interesting posts. I didn’t have many this month.
2. Diversify the paid/sponsored post into different topic blogs like hobbies, gadgets, travel etc. All the paid/sponsored post ended here (on this Chess blog) during the experiment because my other blogs were not approved yet by PayPerPost. So a lot of unrelated posts like “Hotels”, “Mortgage”,”Insurance” were seen here.
3. I should have registered for other advertising channels such as Sponsored Review, Bidvertise, Blogads, etc. as I only have 4 channels of income. PPP being the biggest paying channel. I will probably have to try these different advertising and see which work.
4. Have to learn more from gurus such as LiewCF.com, 5xmom.com and JohnChow.com as there are so many articles from them I have yet to read.

Those are the four main channels of income that made this experiment a success. That’s too small a number I think. Having additional new streams of income is certainly possible and many bloggers are registered with multiple ad programs. I’ll add more programs and that’ll be probably another experiment later. (Thousand Dollar Experiment II ?? this time in USD ??
