Went to PC Fair and bought my ADSL modem

It was raining heavily so like the rest of the PC Fair enthusiasts, I took the underground walkway to the KL Convention Centre from KLCC Suria shopping complex. Of course it’s crowded like crazy!

I was planning to take pictures but the place was so crowded, if I pulled out my camera to take pictures, all I would have is pictures of heads.

Anyway here are the two rare spots where it was not so crowded.

Some new stuff like this minimalistic desktop wannabe notebook NEC computer.

This is what I came here to buy. Thanks to the suggestion of Lee Kwan Ping, a good chess friend, I chose the Aztech DSL605E. They had the USB edition for RM 5 more but I didn’t need USB because the modem will be connected to my wireless router.

The LRT and bus back home took me almost 2 hours with the jam but it was worth it.

Immediately plugged in the modem and held my breath looking at the DSL light as it blinked.

Didn’t connect !! The DSL just kept on blinking :(

What a bummer!

Oops connected the wrong phone line. Reconnected with a different line and it connected without any problems. The DSL light blinked and stayed on!

Wished I had found some benchmark program tested my old modem before it died. Anyway I tested by downloading some podcasts in MP3 format and the speed was about 150Kb/s which is almost the same as the old Riger modem.

I’m happy. Now I’m back online again :)

Oh the price of the modem is RM 72.

I also bought 50 blank Imation DVDs for RM 43 to backup my harddisk (again). Still want to install Ubuntu and setup the Linux chess server to try running a FIC clone. This has been a long overdue personal project of mine :)
