Negative publicity from chess gamblers?
MyMetro reported on the following news about chess gambling in Jalan Chow Kit. Of course this is well known among local chess players. Personally, I’ve seen the chess gamblers in action when I was blogged about the 2005 Zonal in KL a few years back. I remember someone joking if GM Utut (who was playing and incidentally winning the event) would walk across the street, pretend to be a patzer and whack the hell out of the players there. However the article from MyMetro is anything but funny. It paints a very negative light on the chess players there.

The writer is either biased towards Indonesians (look how he added their “sabung ayam” activities) or ignorant that chess hustling can be easily found in and around parks of countries like the USA and across Europe.
The only objectible thing I find is that these people are not paying taxes from their winnings!
I find it funny that this type of money making is called gambling. Investing in stocks depends more on luck than chess which requires every quality of a fighter (the mind) and just a tad bit of luck.
Try writing that about people hustling in papers in America and he’ll definitely be sneered upon.
