Malaysian Online Playing Site?

So many chess people have talked to me and asked about setting up a Malaysian online playing site similiar to ICC, FICS and WCL. I’m not against it but it is unlikely to succeed business-wse because of the expensive server cost. You’ll have to be prepared to pay about at least RM 400 per month just for the hosting cost alone.

Still it’s a fun idea to try out even if I don’t have the fast servers to support it. The software is free and I’ve just downloaded it to my computer. I’m thinking of installing it at home and make my notebook the internet chess server. Of course the speed will be awful but I want to find out how bad it really is. Perhaps it won’t be so bad as to serve longer time controls such as 5 or 10 minute games. Not only that, the client software have advanced features where you can show a chessboard and discuss the variation real time. That has endless possiblities in chess coaching and sharing of information. Currently ICC offers that but only to select coaches.

Looking at the server software I downloaded ,it runs on Linux. So it’ll take me some time to set this all up because I need to backup my stuff and free up some hard disk space to install Ubuntu. Going out now to buy empty DVDs for backup :)
