Patzer Notebook Upgrade
It’s exactly a year now that I’ve used my Patzer Notebook - a Dell 640M 1Gb RAM Core Duo notebook. I’m pretty happy with it as it has been a great help to my work in doing my websites and also building chess apps like ChessPublisher.com.
The only niggling thing I want is a longer battery life (currently 2 and a half hours with WiFi on). The other thing may be the slowdown after I opened more than 20 browser windows. Sometimes memory leakage is so bad that I have to close down the browsers and reboot. But that’s usually after leaving the notebook on for half the day.
Anyway, the cheapest way I can upgrade and speed up this notebook is to get some extra RAM. Currently I have only 1 Gb which is just adequate. 2 GB will be a nice boost in the number of apps I can open and also get speed improvement.
Notebook RAM prices have dropped. This is the latest price I got from Computer War.
| Notebook / Laptop RAM |
|
| PC333 Kingston DDR 512MB | 108.00 |
| PC333 Kingston DDR 1.0GB | 268.00 |
| PC667 Kingston DDR2 512MB | 37.00 |
| PC667 Kingston DDR2 1.0GB | 65.00 |
| PC667 Kingston DDR2 2.0GB | 139.00 |
| PC667 Corsair DDR2 512MB | 42.00 |
| PC667 Corsair DDR2 1.0GB | 65.00 |
I have 512Mb x 2 RAM on board so I guess I have to dump the old RAM to replace with a one-piece 2GB RAM. I just have to check whether the PC667 DDR2 is compatible with my Dell.
