ASEAN+ Youth Team is TOO EXPENSIVE !!

I just checked to find out why some people were complaining about the fees being expensive for the upcoming ASEAN+ Youth Championship. I will be there at the event to report live (really miss doing that after so long!!). Just found out that the fees to join per team is a whpping RM 500. If Fadli didn’t mention it on my shoutbox I wouldn’t have know that too. Thanks Fadli.

That sounds just TOO EXPENSIVE !! Even our Merdeka Team (usually adults) are only RM 300+. And these are just a team of juniors.

However on further investigation, (actually I just asked the organisers :) )I found out that the organisers have to pay to FIDE ratifying fees that amount to 100 EURO (about RM 500) for each team

Entry Fees for Participation

7.1

The entry fees are:

World Team Championship: 270 Euro for each team
Chess Olympiad: 270 Euro for each team
World Cities Team Championship: 500 Euro for each team +
World Junior U-20 Team Championship: 100 Euro for each team
World Youth U-16 Team Championship: 100 Euro for each team
World Individual Championship/World Cup:

- Men - USD 150 for each player

Note: Bold Red emphasis mine.

In other words the sponsors are absorbing the additional cost of the tournament and the entry fees just covers the FIDE ratifying fees. FIDE fees are pretty expensive. Even the last year’s small rating tournament required about RM 300 per person to cover cost. Would you pay for such a rating tourney ? I probably would if I wasn’t too strapped
for cash this few months. I’d be really interested to get a FIDE rating. Maybe next year :)

So, on second thoughts, I have to say the entrance fee is NOT expensive  knowing what I know now. Do you think it’s expensive ? It is a fully rated FIDE event for juniors. Come to think of it, we don’t have that many rated tourneys for kids in Malaysia. Hopefully this  will results in some new FIDE rated Malaysian juniors to be added in the pool of
local FIDE rated players. The more FIDE rated we have, the better right?  Furthermore it is regional event as it will involve players from other ASEAN countries.  I still don’t know which country will be participating but it’ll be interesting to find out. it’s unfortunate 3 big events clash at the same time -  Stonemaster Pro/Amateur, GACC and ASEAN+ Youth Team.Wish I can cover all three events at the same time .. :(
