How I finished top 10 on Stonemaster Amateur

I’m still puzzled how I could finish top 10 in Stonemaster’s
tournament. It’s something I do not expect. I certainly hoped for it
but definitely did not believe it was possible.

Here’s why I think I got 7th position in the tourney:

No job, no problem.

I’ve left my job for almost 3 months now and the daily grind just makes
you stupid (in my humble opinion). You are so tired, you are just a
zombie. How can you play in that state right ? Even on weekends the
work zombie feeling lingers.

Happier state of mind

With less worries like office politics and the stress of whether you
job performance will give you enough bonus for next year or not
certainly helped. When you are happier you play better chess.

No chess training

I had zero training online. I did not do any chess tactics
exercise. I did not read a chess book. In short, I had ZERO
preparation. Too much training, especially last minute “training” is
just counter productive.

Lucky

The luck of the draw certainly helped me get the 6/7. But I don’t think
my last 3 opponents were especially weak at all. I was lucky to win the
game towards the end when things turned around unexpectedly in my
favour.
