No Chess culture in Malaysia?

Responding to a recent comment on the shoutbox, I have to agree that compared to the Philippines  and Indonesia, I think Malaysia  really does NOT have the same level of “chess playing culture”. The Indonesians and Pinoy play chess everywhere. Strong players actually spar against each other to try to improve. It’s rare to see that here in Malaysia.

Perhaps all we need is some good place to play chess. No, I don’t mean playing allegro or rapid tournaments but a place where chess enthusiasts meet weekly just to play.

That’s a start right? How can we even promote a chess culture when we don’t have a proper place to play?

There has been some groups that do have regular meet ups like in Shah Alam and Johor Bahru. But they meet in ad-hoc places like food courts, A&W, Starbucks and other non-chess conducive places.
