Effects of Chess Politics

This is just my simplistic view but looking at different countries and the effect of chess politics we can see how detrimental it’s effect can be to a nation’s effort in chess development.

China
Almost no politics and their country policy on chess developement is clear. There are today one of the chess giants of the world.

USA
As can be seen from Susan Polgar’s unhappy comment on how chess politicians back stab one another to the downfall of American chess. US has seen a surge of chess interest after the ‘Fischer phenomenon’ but after that, the country chess development seems to plateu and the only improvement in their chess strength seem to come from the influx of Soviet GMs.

Philipines
No doubt one of the strongest Asian country but have their share of chess politics muddying things up. There is a very strong chess culture there and we’ve seen many strong Philippine GMs. However their chess development have slowed drastically compared to emerging countries like Vietnam.

Vietnam
Another strong country producing many strong juniors. Again little or no chess politics.
