Singapore vs Malaysia Chess Challenge 2007

This event is coming up soon on the Dec 15 to 16. Is Malaysia ready to fight? Can we get back our former glory?

Realistically speaking I’m not sure. I think we have added new strong juniors into our arsenal. But Singapore has some really strong addition too. They have a couple of new titled players like GM Zhang Zhong and WGM Li Roufan.  Singapore now officially has 3 GMs.

Strongest Lineup?
Will Singapore send their strongest lineup to crush Malaysia? I think the pressure is on Singapore this time. Malaysia are the underdogs (as we have been for several years now). It is also very clear that Singapore’s youth program looks to be more systematic and centralised compared to Malaysia. If Singapore fail to send their strongest line up and loses, you can imagine the loss of face to Singapore.

It will be interesting to watch. Last year, Malaysians narrowed down the humiliation of losing in previous years to a 79.5 - 60.5 loss to Singapore.

Though many doubt this, I believe this year we have a chance for an upset vs Singapore. This is my personal prediction: Malaysia will win by a narrow margin.

This year the event will be in Singapore.

Your prediction is based on Singapore not fielding its strongest lineup. You may also remember that in the past 3 to 4 years, Singapore had fielded players way above their age groups and these young players held their ground against the older and more experienced Malaysian players. Zhang Zhong and Li Roufan were not even part of the Singapore contingent. Singapore should continue to allow the younger players to player in the higher age categories. Even if that results in a defeat, there is no shame.
I find your comment based on hope rather than facts.

singapore will win, but i would be satisfied if malaysia can continue to narrow the mafgin. 75-65 win for Singapore if 140 boards

It would be nice if the number of boards could be increased by 25%. This will really test the depth of talent pool in both countries.
If Malaysia wishes to have a chance of winning, it must keep up the training and competition momentum for another 3 to 5 years. Is there enough stamina?

In the game of chess, I think we lag Singapore by a generation (30 years). Their organisation is the strong point that differentiates the playing strengths of the 2 countries. Singapores has NEVER been placed lower than Malaysia on FIDE’s rating list.

You are entitled that opinion and I’m sure you are not far off. On paper Singapore looks so much superior to Malaysia. A win or even a narrowing of our loss is going to be a fantastic boost of morale to Malaysia.

I’m not just hoping Malaysia can do this, but I feel that this will happen seeing new developments in our juniors.

Whatever it is, it will be an exciting ‘friendly’ Malaysia-Singapore match.

In my opinion, Singapore aren’t willing to play their top players as it would be open to people saying that Singapore won through foreign imports. Zhang Zhong, Li Ruofan and Wu Shaobin were not even Singaporeans to start with.

CF, looking at the fide list of top singaporean players, if we were to remove all these imported glory, I doubt it would be anywhere a gap of “a generation”.

I meant CF

I mean Malaysian. I can’t view the page properly in this browser.

If we were to strip out Singapore’s imports and focus on the future say those born in 1987 and after i.e. the Under 20s,

1. There are 26 players with FIDE ratings above 2010.
2. There are another 14 players with FIDE ratings between 1900 and 1999.
3. Average rating of the top 10 players is 2192.
4. Average rating of the top 20 players is 2131.
5. Average rating of the top 26 players is 2106.

It will be very interesting to develop such a list for Malaysia. However, I cannot data mine the FIDE list for the information.

Can someone assist?

Let us base our opinions on facts not emotions.

[...] predict a narrow win for Malaysia. What’s yours ? What is your prediction for Singapore-Malaysia [...]

I still predict a win for Singapore. If Singapore continues to play their better juniors in higher age categories, the margin of victory will be narrowed. It would be good if Malaysia also moves their stronger juniors to higher boards. It will then be a better gauge of relative strength.

Yes Singapore definitely has stronger juniors than Malaysia. However I think the improvements and adding of new talents to Singapore pool has slowed somewhat while Malaysia has increased.

If Singapore follows the same strategy as last year(playing juniors at higher boards), I think Malaysia has a high possibility to perform better.
