Celcom vs Maxis

A friend of mine asked me whether the new Celcom broadband advertised
on TV is any good. I haven’t heard of it so I checked out their website.

It looked pretty attractive with the small USB device that’s used for connection.

Ok on paper let’s compare:-

Maxis Wireless

  • speed: 384 Kbps
  • cost: RM 68 / month
  • modem: bigger than Celcom’s datacard and with 3 hours battery life
  • coverage: ???

Celcom broadband

  • speed: 384 Kbps
  • cost: RM 68 / month
  • modem: two options - use an existing 3G phone or a datacard
  • coverage: ???

Coverage
Since
the cost is the same, then the question will be whether the coverage is
good or not. From reading the local forums and blogs, I get some
comment saying Maxis started out good but with more subscribers the
connection speeds are getting worse. Of course this is unsubstantiated
and I’ll ask one of my cousin who is already using it for a few months.

Celcom data card

Modem vs Data card
Maxis uses a modem and the cost of RM 68 covers the modem too. It is portable with 3 hours of battery life but kind of big.

For
Celcom, you need to have a 3G phone to make connections OR you can get
a data card (top picture). I heard you can get a cheap datacard at Low
Yat for RM 50.

I’m tempted to get one of these. Being able to
connect anywhere is very attractive. Have to see what is feedback from
others about the coverage and connection speeds first.

Update:
Just saw this on their website. Maxis has a nice and small USB modem too but it’s a little too expensive for me at RM 138 per month.
