Fast WiFi at Bernard’s Restaurant
I’ve been working online the last few days outside of home using WiFi services outdoors.
Yesterday I used CentrePoint’s WiFi and Time WiFi from Starbucks. It’s ok for regular surfing but when I wanted to upgrade my WordPress blogs to the latest WordPress ver 2.3 release, I found the FTP upload speeds painfully slow. Both CentrePoint and TIme connections were terrible. Frequent disconnects meant some of my files were corrupted. That meant a big headache for me to find out exactly which file was uploaded partially. In the end I had websites that came out blank and took hours to repair them. Tip: don’t do your WordPress upgrades when you have lousy FTP connections.
Today, at CentrePoint, I found out there was more than one WiFi access point. Bernard’s Restaurant located in CentrePoint also offered FREE WiFi. The FTP upload speed was fantastic so I even upgraded this blog to the newest Wordpress version.
After the upload I got the above screen.
Clicked on “Continue” and I had a brand new upgrade! Quick and painless.
Since the connection was so good I was curious to find out what service Bernard’s was using. I did a quick reverse DNS search …
I was surprised to find out it was TMNet Streamyx ! Hmm.. I guess the poor connection for Starbucks and CentrePoint public WiFi is because there are too many people using it ?
Upload speeds were fast but download speeds at Bernard’s Restaurant is not bad either:-
Now if only the boss of Bernard’s Restaurant would give me a free meal for all the free publicity I’m giving the restaurant
Also a shout out to the two chess enthusiasts who meet up and play chess regularly at Centre Point, Bandar Utama, regularly on Friday or Saturday nights.
