Cheap GPS
While on the subject of GPS, or Global Positioning Systems (Wikipedia definition here), I took a look at the price of a GPS system that’s available locally. I’m interested in it because even with a map of KL, I’ve gotten lost twice while trying to get to the Kepong Open for 2 years in a row. I have a lousy sense of direction
The Holux M-1000 bluetooth was the cheapest GPS gadget I’ve seen so far. You can find it at Lelong and it’s current price is between RM 99 - 180. You can find a lelong bid here. It’s cheap because it’s just a receiver and has no display unit. To see the map you’ll require a PDA or notebook. Since I already have a PDA the GPS receiver is perfect. There are also standalone devices with display but they priced around RM 600.
The M-1000 can track up to 32 satellites simultaneously, re-acquires satellite signals in 0.1 microsecond. It can also work anywhere in the world and there is no fee to pay to receive the satellite signals.
Also, maps can be downloaded for free from http://www.malsingmaps.com. Here’s how the maps look like:-
