GACC
One of the success stories for Malaysian Chess is GACC. Until last year, I did not know how big this event has grown over the years. It has secured big name sponsors that will put many other local tournaments to shame. I know this after attending last year’s GACC closing ceremony at The Legend hotel and seeing how grand it was. But then again, GACC is not local. It’s an international tournament opened to all undergraduates all over the world and is organised by the Second Residential College, University Of Malaya. These UM students are the ‘helpers’ you see at the recent DATMO, Merdeka Team Rapids and Merdeka Team Standard tournament. By the way, I just found out that GACC stands for The Grand Asian Chess Challenge and was initially open only to participants from Asia. However, due to it’s popularity it is now an international event.
This year’s 12th GACC will begin on 4th of December and despite the weaker turnout last year due to a clash of tournament, we got to witness the magic of Wang Hao as he effortlessly beat all his opponents at University of Malaya. I can’t wait to see what 2007 GACC will bring..
