Patzer Notebook update

Yeah this patzer has already got his Dell 640m. But Dell just released a slew of new models which is pretty cool looking.

It’s the Vostro series and for the first time Dell is paying attention to looks. An all black Dell notebook looks really nice.

Of course like all electronic gadgets, over time the notebook specs have gradually gotten cheaper and with the same price I paid for my Dell 640m about half a year ago I can get a really souped up machine today.

Here’s the specs with a price tag of RM 3,088 (About USD 906) which is slightly cheaper compared to the notebook I got on January.

Specs:

  • Base System Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5470
  • 1.66GHz, 2MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB
  • Operating System Genuine Windows Vista(TM) Business - with AERO experience
  • Dell(TM) PC-Restore Software
  • LCD Panel 14.1″ Widescreen WXGA (1280×800) TFT Display
  • Memory 2GB (2 X 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive 80GB SATA Hard Drive
  • Optical Drive Internal 24X Max DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
  • Video Card Intel(R) Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
  • Wireless Network Card Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card
  • Batteries 9-cell 85Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery
  • Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet
  • Internal 56K Modem + RJ-11 Modem cable (AP)
  • Software:

  • Microsoft(R) Works 8.5 (Does Not Include Microsoft(R) Office 2003/2007 Software)
  • Roxio Creator 9.0
  • Security Software Norton(TM) Internet Security(TM) 30 days Trial
  • Dell(TM) Media Direct
  • Other stuff:

  • Dell Services: Hardware Maintenance 1 Year CompleteCover
  • 1-Year Limited Warranty (Next Business Day Service - parts & labour)
  • Free Delivery
  • I’ve chosen to add to the list a 9-cell battery instead of the normal 6-cell which should extend the battery life from 3 hours to 5 hours.
The obvious advantage is you don’t have to carry the clunky “brick” power supply as five hours is good for most one-day work on the notebook.

The other difference compared to my “old” 640m is the Intel Core 2 Duo. My old config only had a normal Core Duo (solo). As if Fritz is not strong enough on a normal Core Duo . the Core 2 Duo should make any old chess engine look like you have a few Kasparovs on your notebook! :D
Also, the other major addition is the 2 GB RAM memory. It’s a RM400 addition but it’s definitely needed if you want to run Vista and push it to it’s limit. Overall a pretty impressive setup (in my humble opinion :) ). Wished I could trade in my old Dell 640m for the Vostro 1400 :(

    PS:
Take note that the price for the above specs can change anytime. Prices can go up and down pretty quickly as Dell continuously adjust their prices due to the fluctuating prices for the notebook parts. Sort of like the sharemarket. Set your ideal price and grab it when that target price is reached.
