Reboot: 3 months of Unlearning and Relearning
I’m looking forward to my last day of work which will be 3 weeks from now.
In the office I’m doing mostly documentation work and runnning thru my old programs taking screen shots and writing user guides and admin guides. It pains me to hear my colleagues doing something new but I cannot help them. It’s no longer my responsibility. I know what will take them days to complete I can fix for them in a few hours. (not boasting here but it’s 8 years familiarity with what I’ve always been doing whereas my colleagues have only spent less than a year doing it)
Looking at new developments on the web, I find myself very far behind. It’s like taking a few years off chess and coming back and having to catch up with new opening novelties and developments. I’ve been swimming in sub-standard codes written by fresh grads and that has definitely not contributed in me learning anything new these past 3 years. It’s sad to look back and see my only real programming achievements is a data bridge I took 3 months to write and my chess publisher. It makes my mouth water to hear about new programming framework that can speed up development time up to 5 times faster compared to the traditional way of programming. I can’t wait to try them out!
Anyway, once I get out of my day job, I’ll dedicate 3 full months to unlearning all the bad habits I picked up in programming and also in chess. I have to relearn new things in order to progress. It will be exciting because for the first time I can channel my energy into creating web applications for my own projects and not for some client or customer.
