Online Dating
Okay after that terrible rant on my work, let’s go to something more lighter.
Has anyone been involved in cyber dates or online relationship ? Well I have, sort of.
Long before the internet we had the BBS (Bulletin Board Services) maintained by what we call SySops (System Operators). Basically a BBS is just someone’s computer connected to a dialup line but typically at least 2 or more phone lines. You dial in using your modem and exchange messages with the server in bulk. It’s sort of like our Chess Malaysia newsgroup. You join ‘channels’ and get to communicate with like minds via group messages similiar to email.
One of my close friends that I grew close with was this girl going under a pseudonym. From our exchanges she was just 2 years younger than me and we chatted about almost everything. Since our communications were public (seen by other members of the channel), the conversations were never personal but was very light and humerous most of the time.
One day we decided to meet. Since I was working as a computer lecturer at that time we fixed the meeting at my college. THe biggest surprise of all was discovering that she was a student at that college!! That was awkard. Although I was not her teacher but I was scheduled to be one of her lecturer in her later subjects. SO our ‘date’ was just a brief “Hi, I can’t believe that was you !!”.
After that the conversation just died down and she left the country following her father who was a pilot. Somehow meeting face to face just killed our online friendship. Well that was ancient history. Today with the internet, websites like FriendFinder are sprining up. These websites makes it very easy to find new people to chat with or get a date. Just browsing thru the website I can see that it has an extensive database of details to match couples. You enter your details and try to find a match with someone who shares similiar interest. Check out FriendFinder if you are into online dating.
