Bad News for WCN members

“More details regarding the new World Chess Live services are available at www.worldchesslive.com/wcn . This will also be the site where, effective May 29th, you will be able to transfer your existing WCN membership to the new World Chess Live service. May 29th is also the day that the existing WCN playing site and the WCN company store will be closed.”
Bad news for WCN lovers. Looks like the “integration” is just a shift of members from WCN to Chess Live.
Looks like whether I like it or not, I’ll have to get used to ICC style user interface come 29th May. ![]()
Membership-based services like ours have high fixed costs for software development and operation, administration, event coverage, etc., but relatively low “marginal” costs, i.e. the added cost of supporting each additional member. As the online chess service with the largest base of subscribers, ICC enjoys resources that give it tremendous flexibility in its operations, while both WCN and Chess Live have long been constrained by their lower and recently declining membership numbers.
One of the biggest issues I have with other chess playing site is that I really don’t like their user interface having tried ICC, FIC client programs like Blitzin. Maybe it’s just me but I find them not as responsive or as fast as WCN. Chess Live confirms it …
Admittedly, the interface is still a bit more complex than the WCN interface and will take some getting used to, but you’ll find a comprehensive help system for support, plus Julie and many of the WCN crew to help you get up to speed, and you’ll soon discover new capabilities (such as a built-in chess engine to analyze games and play off-line).
“Uncomfortable” is the keyword here. Perhaps this is a good thing. I might not enjoy playing bullet so much anymore. Less bullet should be better for my chess improvement?
You may find the move to World Chess Live a little uncomfortable at first, but we’ll do our best to ease you through the transition and I’m confident that you’ll soon be excited about your new home. Our # 1 goal is to prove to you that World Chess Live is the best place for you to play chess on the Internet.
