GilaChess.com to become a blog ?

thinker.jpgI’ve been undecided lately about how to go about upgrading GilaChess.com. Currently it runs on the old version of a software called PostNuke.

I’ve looked at major Content Management Systems (CMS) out there such as Drupal, Xoops, Joomla and the new PostNuke. It was a hard decision but I finally settled (or so I thought) on Joomla since it was the most popular CMS at this time. Joomla certainly is fully featured and has very advanced options in publishing web content. But that also makes learning Joomla pretty difficult. I consider myself a techie but until now I find that I still don’t know how to make Joomla do certains things that I want.

So I’m at crossroads again. I’ve been wondering if I should just ditch all the fancy CMS software and go with a simple blog platform for the new GilaChess website. WordPress blog to be exact. WordPress is simple but easily expandable with the use of add-ons. And it has really powerful add-ons. Another reason is that publishing a blog post is faster and easier using WordPress. I can’t really say why this is but it just feels easy.

Also, since GilaChess main content is announcement of chess events and chess results, the items appear in chronological order (sorted by newest to oldest) - exactly how blog posts appear. So it’s not strange to post all GilaChess items as a blog posts. One advantage of WordPress is that it is very search engine friendly so all the chess news and announcements will be indexed nicely by top search engines like Google and Yahoo. Currently I feel that the old GilaChess website is not indexed properly by search engines.

I need feedback from GilaChess readers. Should GilaChess become a blog?

What should GilaChess.com run on?
