Backup and Reformat

It’s a holiday today but I’m not going to the 34th Royal Selangor today. Main reason is I’ve fallen behind on my thousand dollar experiment even though I met the target in the first week.

First order of business is to clear off this patzer’s notebook of rubbish and crap that is slowing everything down. I also suspect that there is a virus or spyware in the harddisk.

I’m spending the day to completely format the Dell notebook and reinstall the original Windows XP media edition. Only then can I continue working effectively. If your life is in your computer you should defend it with your life. - that’s an exaggerated tagline/slogan from a computer ad but I believe there’s some truth in it.

I’m using the built-in Roxio DVD burner software to back up my data into DVDs. I bought 5 blank DVDs for this purpose. That should let me backup about 20Gb of data. I hope I don’t backup the viruses into the DVDs too !!

Also, in the next install I will remove almost all the “free” software that came packaged with the Dell Notebook. Most of it is “crapware” because they are mostly evaluation copies which will expire after a month or so. Besides they run at startup and also slow the computer down.

Looking forward to have a “brand new” notebook again as I know after the cleanup, the speed of the notebook will be fast again.

Canon Powershot 710ISSorry about sacrificing one day of reporting on the Royal Selangor Chess Open 2007 but think of it this way, the money I gain for the camera will make for better chess reporting in future. No more small, blurry camera phone pictures like what you see at the bottom of this page :D
