Download GilaChess Calendar events

As a webmaster running GilaChess which is the portal listing all chess events in Malaysia, I sometimes feel embarassed when I wake up late in the morning and have to scramble and log into GilaChess.com last minute to find out the details of the tournament such as the time and the exact venue. The problem is compounded when the Internet is down. So I’ve been thinking of ways to download the event details into the PC/notebook and view it offline when I need to. Here’s one solution I’ve found..

If you are using Sunbird (a calendar and scheduling app similiar to Outlook) you can sync the chess events I have in my calendar into your PC.

Here’s how..

Step 1.
Start your Sunbird. Download it if you don’t have it yet. It’s free!

Step 2.
Select from the menu File -> New Calendar

Step 3.
Choose on the network.

Step 4.
Click Next.

Step 5.
Choose iCalendar for the format.

Step 6.
Fill the the location with the following:-

Step 7.
Click Next and give the Calendar a name (any name will do) and choose a color for the events.

Step 8.
Click Finish and you are done!

One advantage is that any extra details entered into that calendar is viewable in the description field. Example for the Royal Selangor Open, you can see the time for each round as well as rest days.

Useful shortcut: (control-R) in Sunbird to refresh.

PS:
For Mac users, it would also be possible to download and sync to iCal using the link

Not sure about Outlook but I heard it can also import ICS files.

Personally I find this tremedously useful because I don’t even need to install Sunbird on my PC or notebook. I just install the portable version of Sunbird into my thumbdrive and carry it around. I can check the events as long as I can find a PC or notebook which is very easy nowadays. The good thing is I don’t need to be online!
