Alexa - Is it reliable?
I put an Alexa button at the right side of this blog as a vanity indicator to see whether my blog is doing well or not.
However, I’ve read from many comments that Alexa rankings is not worth much. Yet, sites like Pay Per Post use it to grade a website. Some of the criterias of advertisers require a website meet a certain minimum Alexa ranking and Google Page Rank. So if you have a high Alexa ranking, you have more opportunities to make money accepting ‘paid posts’. In short, a high Alexa ranking + Google PR is like a license to make more money.
One of the reason why many say Alexa can be taken with a grain of salt is that it relies on the Alexa Toolbar.

This toolbar, is used to calculate Alexa rankings, works only on Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher) on Windows.
We all know there are other browsers on different platforms out there such as Firefox and Macs.
This raises doubts in Alexa’s accuracy, since the Alexa toolbar doesn’t really work on those two platforms.
Anyway my final thoughts are, Alexa is still ok as a general indicator to show whether traffic is going up or down.
