The Thousand Dollar Experiment

money.jpgI’m taking a break from chess but not from my other favourite activity, blogging. This time however I’ll be joining a favourite past time of many local bloggers which is blogging for money.

I never really reported how much I made online thru blogging as the sum is embarassingly small compared to some bloggers whose online income is several times more than my full time work salary.LiewCF and 5xmom is two good examples of Malaysian bloggers who make a very tidy sum of money online.

So instead of talking about chess training I’ll be doing something seemingly more greedy, that is, to blog for money. I mentioned once that chess players who need to finance themselves can look to blogging as one source of income. Don’t laugh! There is serious money to be made here.

I’ve used numbers such as reaching 1800 rating in my chess training as motivation to move towards a goal. It’s been a fantastic tool for focusing my efforts on one thing. I’ll do the same here.

As an experiment, my target is to make RM 1,000 (USD 285) in one month. (Ok Ok “Ringgit” in the title is more accurate than “Dollar” :D ). My usual monthly income from blogging only averages about RM 150. So this will be 600% increase. This is a serious challenge as I’m still working full time as a programmer and I can only blog outside of work during the mornings and nights. Let’s see at the end of one month if I can reach this target. (The period of this experiment is from 17th April 2007 to 17th May 2007)

Wish me luck…

you’ll make it :) i did the same as you did, and managed to get even better the next month… at least u already have a good start :)

Wow. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I see you’ve met your one month target and made RM1600.

That’s pretty impressive. I didn’t know there’s so many channels and ad companies you can use. For me I mainly have Adsense and Pay Per Post. I’ll look into other ads like the ones that you used.

I don’t know about “having a good start”. Seems to me you have a better start than me.

Oh very nice template by the way.. :D

Hahaha, i don’t even know making an income by blogging is really profitable. I guess i just don’t know the way? Is it mainly based on ads companies?

Best wishes and hope you will achieve your target of RM1000 in 1 month! I know you can do it!

[...] only my second post but unfortunately I will be taking a hiatus from chess. Need a break and do something different to refresh my mind. Don’t worry, this patzer will be back soon .. Last [...]

Yes it is definitely lucrative. I’ll document as much of it as possible here in this blog.

Yes most of the $$$ comes from ad companies like Nuffnang, Adsense and PayPerPost.

tip: choose a profitable topic. “chess” is not.

Another one bites the dust :)

Good luck.

gilachess - u already have a good start by getting about RM150/month. i started off from RM0/month :P

But you have a better start!!

Checking with netcraft.com, your website is still new (created this year) and earning that much money while my site started 7 years ago.

I have lots to catch up on :D

You already have a quite well established blog and I really think that, in order to pump your source of blogging income, you should cover some international chess bits as well! =D

Your thoughts and perspectives on the going ons, maybe how it affects chess in countries trying to develop the interest in chess as well as ours. I’m not saying that it should only be chess as I see that you do have an interest in other things outside of chess.

LcF: I’m honored that the Pro-blogger himself is commenting here. Ok, noted. I’ll expand my topics in my new websites (not this one) that will cover E-Learning, PHP programming, Movies, Tech and Gadgets stuff (like yours).

Papyn: Yeah you are absolutely right. I’ve been narrowly focusing on Malaysian chess all this while. Time to look further into the horizon..

Darksider: What do you mean? I’ve not ‘bite the dust yet’ :D

the site listed in my nick is my new blog… still new…
the one that’s earning me money is not that blog :) although will soon be one of the income stream…

the main blog that’s earning me money is http://www.ashotiwoth.com/blog :) i’m still learning also… hehe
