SEM for Chess

I’m playing catch up with Internet technologies. So many new things have popped up and even though I’m a web programmer, I know very little of things like Search Engine Marketing (SEM). I’m also reading up on Search Engine Marketing Malpractice so I do not make mistakes as a patzer in this field of SEM. Also reading up Pay Per Click to promote my websites. You can actually pay money to certain companies that in turn increase traffic by driving more visitors to your website.
In Internet marketing, search engine marketing, or SEM, is a set of marketing methods to increase the visibility of a website in search engine results pages (SERPs). SEM strategies include:
* Search engine optimization attempts to improve rankings for relevant keywords in search results by improving a web site’s structure, content, and relevant backlink count.
* Pay per click advertising uses sponsored search engine listings to drive traffic to a web site. The advertiser bids for search terms, and the search engine ranks ads based on a competitive auction as well as other factors.
* Paid inclusion feeds listings into search engines, typically comparative shopping sites like Nextag.
* Social media optimization promotes by placing ideas within online communities with the hope that they will spread virally.

The reason I feel I need to know this is because GilaChess.com has slipped further into obscurity in terms of Search Engine ranking. The strange thing is that traffic for GilaChess has been increasing as can be seen from the numbers of visitors. (200+ per day).
However the bad Alexa rankings means, GilaChess.com website is losing importance in cyberspace and I want to stop that decline. In short, GilaChess become more popular locally but loosing out in ranking internationally.
One good example of a chess website that has used SEM with great effectiveness is ChessManiac.com. That website is new but has climbed the ladder of website rankings and popularity quite rapidly. They have used all the newer methods of marketing including advertising on this blog 2 months ago. They paid at least RM100 for ad placement here as well as GilaChess.com.
ChessManiac now ranks highly on Alexa at top 64,952. It has a Google PR of 6 !! GilaChess on the other hand ranks 2,851,428 on Alexa and only has a PR ranking of 4. I can only say one thing: If any of my website reaches PR 6, I can quit my day job and blog for chess full time !!
