Microsoft Sued for not having enough ‘WOW’

When I bought my Dell notebook I forego the RM99 extra for getting Vista Home Basic. The reason was because it was said (on the net) that there’s no point getting Vista Home Basic and it’s not any better than the Windows XP Media Edition that came bundled with the Dell 640m notebook.

The proposed class action, which Microsoft disputes, was filed on behalf of personal-computer buyer Dianne Kelley of Camano Island.

Apparently Dianne Kelley went out to buy a PC with a Vista Ready sticker on it but after buying it she found out that it was the bare minimum to run Vista Home Basic and she couldn’t get the extra ‘wow’ features such as Aero interface etc.

“In sum, Microsoft engaged in bait and switch — assuring consumers they were purchasing ‘Vista Capable’ machines when, in fact, they could obtain only a stripped-down operating system lacking the functionality and features that Microsoft advertised as ‘Vista,’ ” the complaint says. As a result, the suit said, people were buying machines that couldn’t run “the real Vista.”

The suit also alleges that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates contributed to the company’s “deceptive marketing” during a Jan. 29 appearance on the “Today” show, when he said that PC users could upgrade to Windows Vista for less than $100.

I have no regrets for not paying the extra for Vista Home. I’m still using Windows XP Media Edition. For new users, who insists on getting Vista, one advice is to make sure you get a system with a fast graphics card (integrated graphics card is usually not good enough). RAM should also be at least 2 Gb.
