Chess in Las Vegas

Las Vegas the “Sin City”, is the last place you think about chess. It was in Vegas where on August 28 1999, Alexander Khalifman was crowned new world chess champion.

That event was pretty controversial because it was the first time FIDE went for faster time control and a knockout format for the world championship.

This year there are scholastic chess events mentioned by Susan Polgar blog :-

First Annual Susan Polgar World chess Challenge for Boys
Sections: under 19, 14, 11, 8 (as of June 8, 2007)

Second Annual Susan Polgar World Open Championship for Girls
Sections: Open to all ages, under 14, 11, 8
(as of June 8, 2007)

The scholastic events are part of the bigger Chess Festival where evergreen World Senior Champion, GM Viktor Kortchnoi is going to Play in the National Open too. Incidentally their National Open has a prize fund of USD $100,000.

The national open is held annually for over 40 years. Last year’s festival included a chess camp, grandmaster simuls, a blitz tournament, two scholastic events, and a quick chess championship. the 2006 National Open was notably strong with 23 GMs and 17 IMs participating from a total of 104 participants.

Also, Susan Polgar Chess Camp will feature a full or half day session in small groups with GM instructors. You can read more on Susan’s website about this.

I can imagine while the kids are playing, the parents can kill time at the slot machines :D
