Chess takes a lot of time

We all know there are benefits of chess to kids in their studies. It halts or postpones Alzheimer’s disease, that’s the popular opinion anyway. But it just takes up too much time.

For example, the theme of this blog, Chess For Blood is chess improvement. (similiar to my blog). However it has come to a close because chess is just too time consuming.

I was also spending too much time in front of a computer. Reading blogs, writing blogs, commenting blogs– this is all very time consuming and of dubious utility…

I had also been getting a little too wrapped up in my own chess progress. It’s hard to avoid this when you have a public chess improvement blog. So I’m discontinuing the blog too …

…. so says Patrick the blogger for Chess for blood

This is one of the better chess improvement blogs that I’ve seen. But as a blogger, I know understand exactly how he feels. It’s not just the time commitment. It’s also the “trolls” that go around spreading hurtful comments. I actually felt like closing this blog down after I read anti sentiments towards MCF, IntChess, etc and even accusations of me being a crony just because I posted info on some chess events. :(

Here’s what another popular chess blog, Kenilworthian has to say about time commitment.

You have to devote at least two hours a day on average to it with weekly to monthly sessions that are longer — sort of like going to the gym every day to train, doing some more intensive sessions on the weekend, and then running a marathon once a month. Basically, stop watching TV almost entirely. You should play in a tournament at least once per month.

Remember: the one thing that Michael de la Maza never mentions in his book is that he was unemployed during his period of intensive training. I would guess he was also single, childless, and not a home owner. The reason why young people can improve so rapidly is because they have the time to devote to their training that most adults do not. The only advantage that an adult might have over a kid is that we can do things more consciously and deliberately than kids might. If you set aside the time, you can get it done.

You can read the rest of it here.

I do not know about bad comments made by coaches against each other on a personal level.

However, to be able to constructively criticise with valid reasons, a National association like MCF, is the primary right of every of every chess player and lover of the game. There is no personal attack involved, no names are mentioned. It is just pointing out the weaknesses and inactions in the national body which are perpetuated year-in, year-out and which nobody seems to care about. I don’t see why GilaChess should personally feel bad about this.

I would like to be proven wrong, but as a National body MCF can and should do much more to promote the game in Malaysia. There is basiscally very little active promotion which brings public awareness to the game and that explains why the local press is just not interested to report chess events. Even the MCF web-site is not be updated on a regular basis ….only 3 articles this year, all event reporting submitted by Gilachess, who seems be be acting as MCF’s voice (no offence to GilaChess). And we wonder why QSS’s column was axed??
