Bye Bye Windows XP, Hello Linux!

Warning … geeky chess unrelated post…

I’ve dabbled with Linux several years back but it was never mature enough in my opinion to replace MS Windows.

Several weeks ago I installed a version (or what they call distribution) of Linux called Ubuntu.

I love it as it detected everything on the Dell notebook and worked flawlessly.

Still, I removed it as the WiFi didn’t quite work and I couldn’t log on to the Internet.

Today, however, I took the plunge and reinstalled a newer version of Ubuntu ver 6.10 and the WiFi worked!! Right at this moment, I’m blogging using FireFox running on Ubuntu. Way cool!!

FireFox is a great browser and works the same way in Windows as well as in Linux. I’m not used to using the other Linux based software yet but I’ll be learning. Can’t wait to see if it can run some chess interface to chess engines :D

Here’s how my desktop looks like in Ubuntu. (The Windows XP logo is just graphics only. Taken from my Windows XP desktop PC)

So, uh, what anti-virus did you say will you be using again?

um Papyn.. you don’t need anti virus for linux.

Good question!

I only use AVG on Windows.

I haven’t even installed a anti virus on Ubuntu. Probably will install Aegis and ClamAV( http://www.clamav.net/ )

I’m a Debian user and I think Ubuntu is a variant of Debian, so it’s a good choice. Go with GNU / Linux and never look back!

I know. It’s just that some days ago he made a post about anti-virus softwares and what to get, and all of a sudden he changes to Linux. Many people say the thing I said as a pun.

I’m still using both Windows and Ubuntu (dual boot). I haven’t totally abandoned Windows. It’s difficult I can’t do without some of my Windows app like UltraEdit.

Anyway I think Linux can get virusses too but it’s a rare thing.

how do you configure the network/wifi? can u teach me? just show the simple way? im just want to try linux…

Lots of trial and error and too complicated to list it here.

But a quick summary would be:

Get the Ubuntu DVD version. The reason is because you want to get one of the tool called Network Manager. It’s important because it allows you to configure your WiFi and choose multiple WiFi channels that are available. If you just download the CD version .. you’d have to run some installers to download from the net. Pretty hard if your WiFi is not set up yet (chicken and egg situation). The DVD version has all the tools needed and then some.
