Canon A540 - I want

Already got the patzer notebook. Now I’m looking for a camera to take pictures during chess tourneys.

Would you believe I’ve lost 3 digital cameras?

One was lost to a car thief. The other 2 was lost in chess tournaments (2006 Selangor Open and 3rd DATMO)

The pictures in GilaChess.com were taken using my Sony Ericcson 609i camera phone. Pictures quality is decent in average daylight.

Still, I plan to get a new camera at least in time for the DATMO 4 in August (enough time to save up). I like the Canon Powershot series because they are rugged and take pretty good pictures. Also, my last Canon Powershot took good pictures without the flash turned on (an important feature in a chess tournament).

Here’s the features I like about Canon Powershot A540:

* 6.0 megapixel
* 4x optical zoom — can zoom in to see pimples on chess player’s face :D
* ISO 800 — reduces camera shake, great for low-light shooting and blurring of fast-moving subjects (in a blitz game, perhaps)
* Large 2.5″ LCD
* Use standard AA batteries — easy batteries replacement ( I have some NiMH batteries from my previous cameras)
* Videos in VGA 640×480 mode with sound (great for posting to YouTube)

    Get the Powershot A710 IS for image stabiliser, better pics without flash..

    Or just get the Fuji F31d for best low light performance of any compact camera.

    The Canon A540 is a good buy, a step up the A400 which I still feel is a true blogger’s camera. It’s got shutter speed settings, white balance settings, the works.

    Personally I’m saving up for the A710IS. The A540 still has a 3 minute max video mode and the A640 is too bulky and heavy (because of the swivel screen) for me to carry everywhere.

    Here, Fred Lucas told Mark Crowther of TWIC to get a Fujipix F30 for starters. I wonder why?

    Thanks I’ll look into this model. But the IS would be more expensive. Hope the price will fall by August :D

    I’m guessing the main reason is that the Fuji Finepix goes up to ISO 3200 !! That’s supposed to help reduce the blurring of image captured caused shaky hands

    Looks like I have to do more research on digital cameras. There’s so many options to think of.
