Happy Birthday GilaChess!
I just checked my web database and saw that the very first posting I made for GilaChess was on 13th December 2000. I think I’ll make this date the official date GilaChess website first started.
That’s exactly 6 years from today! Here’s my very first post on GilaChess :-

My 18th post about a year later..

Hmm..18 posts in a year is very little. Things were slow then I guess.
I checked and the latest post made is no. 560.
The website has undergone many changes and moved and shifted from many free webservers such as www.snap.com, www.f2s.com and www.sourceforge.net until money donated from GilaChess members finally bought us a permanent place on the web and an actual dot com website. It was a great feeling when I put out the request for donations and seeing immediately people willing to contribute.
I also remember chasing after chess organisers and asking permission to post chess results on the website. “Sir, Sir, can you please give me today’s results??”. Anyway, today, we rarely have to ask, as most organisers send us the results and announcements of new chess events. We thank all chess organisers for making the website the central place for Malaysian Chess News.
Also, a BIG Thank you, readers of GilaChess for your fantastic support !!
The website is now self sustaining with yearly hosting fees paid by advertisements.
In fact, this year we generated enough money to be able to send 2 entries in the Merdeka 2006 team championship. GilaChess Masters and GilaChess Patzers. We even had a GM playing for our masters team (GM Yu Shaoteng who eventually won board 1 prize).
You can check out how GilaChess website used to look here.
For next, year, I’m planning to have a complete website makeover, and perhaps include more informational articles like tutorials and tips.

Hope that next year there will be some tournament ala GrandPrix legs held around regions. Perhaps AmBank will sponsor this too??
& bring back GM Barsov for GilaChess’ Team!
GM Yu ShaoTeng should play for the top China team next year if his compatriots, Ni Hua, etc. are not in Europe playing then.
