Ideas of a National Junior Squad

Malaysian National Junior Squad
There are talks and suggestion of forming a Malaysian National Junior Squad.
Points being:

  • 20-40 selected juniors in U16, U-14, U11, U10, U9 maybe selected from the NAG 2007.
  • ACA/IntChess to provide trainers and discounts for those chosen by MCF to be in the National Junior Squad.
  • Centralised training during school holidays and weekly individual and group sessions.
  • Testing ground: 8th ASEAN Age Group in July 2007.
  • Will this take off? I certainly hope so. I would be positive step in the right direction.

Many think that coaches are only guides with minor roles and it’s still the individual hard work and talent that counts in the end.
I agree with this to a certain extent but look at the older generation of talents like Peter Long, Jimmy Liew, Eric Cheah, Christi Hon, Kamal Abdullah etc. These people had to slog it out and spend years in trial and errors to raise their chess standards to a certain level.

I think juniors are so lucky nowadays. They can take a short-cut and avoid those long years of self experimentation with the help of experienced and professional coaches.

Eric Cheah played at The Star International Chess Competition 2006 on December 9th. He won against NM Ng Tze Han in 5th Round. He should be 43 years young now. His FIDE rating stood at 2255 before he went inactive.
