Chess Patzer Notebook - the sweetspot

Since my question to whether a chess Patzer needs a notebook ? is a resounding YES, I’ve been on the lookout for a notebook that hits the sweet spot. i.e., not too powerful that it is overpriced and not underpowered that is utterly useless.

Dell 1501 Turion 64 Other than the Dell Inspiron 6400, this is my second choice.
It’s another Dell notebook but one that does not use the popular Intel CPU chip. Instead it’s powered by the AMD Turion 64. There is the cheaper model using the AMD Sepron CPU but from the notebook reviews I’ve read, the AMD Sempron is a little underpowered - if, say you want to run Fritz or some chess engine analysis. So I still favour this 64-bit Turion model.

It’s slightly cheaper at RM 2,565.00 (USD 700) compared to the the Dell 6400 (RM2899) and is only RM214 x 12 installment (paid via credit card).

Here are the specs:

  • Price : RM 2,565.00
  • Model:521104 - Dell Inspiron(TM)501 Notebook
  • Base System AMD Turion(TM) 64 Mobile technology MK-36

  • Internal Dell(TM) 87 Keys Keyboard (English)
  • Integrated0/100 Fast Ethernet
  • 65W AC Adapter
  • Display 15.4″ Wide Screen XGA TFT Display (1280×800 res.)
  • Memory 512MB (1 X 512MB) DDR2 SDRAM
  • SATA Hard Drives 80GB SATA Hard Drive
  • Internal Optical Drive Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities

Note: Wow!! Now that I’ve promo 2 dell notebooks I should get paid by Dell , no? ;)

    Man! What a great blog!

I thought my chess blog,J’adoube. . .the off-center Knight, was pretty good, but it’s clear I need to spice mine up!

I’m a software engineer too, but who has time to do a job, study chess and play around with web pages. . .

Anyway, glad I found yours. Your chess publisher if a great tool, BTW. I love it.

Will Fritz run fsater in 64-bit environment?

Fritz 9 will not run any faster in a 64 bit environment because the code was not written to take advantage of 64 bits.

However the new Deep Fritz 10 does was written for 64 bits (according to Chessbase advertisement anyway) so should be faster.

J’adoube.: Thanks for the complement. It’s nice to meet another fellow system engineer/programmer. I understand too well the job tyranny that sucks up your free time - so much that you can hardly find time to improve your chess or maintain a blog. Your blog is not bad. Anyway, I update this blog whenever I can find free time during lunch hour or after work. Also, thanks for using my chess publisher tool. I love it when I see it being used in someone else’s blog :)

[…] I ran thru Dell Malaysia and the price tag for this patzer’s ideal notebook is RM 3,120 (USD 880). Major difference between this model and the previous Dell Inspiron 6400, is the screen for this model is smaller at 14.1 inch and consequently also lighter (2.5kg). […]
