What makes a good tournament website?

I’ve learnt my lesson from the Malaysian Open website. It was really a disaster on my part for not putting up updates in time. The previous two years DATMO reports was really much better than this year’s website reports.

I’ve put my GilaChess.com redesign on hold to focus on the next biggest international tournament in Malaysia this year. It’s the GACC or World Intervarsity Chess Championship. GilaChess.com is the official website sponsor as we are lending or efforts in setting up that site.

On my checklist are the following:-

  • Photo Album
  • Highlighted games from the tournament - with PGN download and javascript/flash playable boards
  • updates at least once a day
  • Easy and fast updates using automated CMS (Content Management System) - XOOPS
  • Delegate the updating task to at least one more webmaster - a university student from UM

It’s sort of my preparation for DATMO 2007 and to make better tournament websites on the whole. I’m no expert but I’m learning. Suggestions in the comment section is most welcomed.

Most important thing first that the venue must have fast internet access. Webmaster cannot do key-in the games also as it’s just too much. There’s a whole chapter on this question by John Saunders (editor of BCM) in Stewart Reuben’s “Chess Organiser’s Handbook Third Edition”

The official website of USCF is an example of a “neat” website:

pictures. beautiful pictures. lots of them

To maintain reader interest, news must come in “fast and furious”. This is a real test and I hope you pass with flying colours.

No need to have full reports before posting. Highlight results will also do.

DATMO was a real disaster and I am glad you agree too. That is real progress!

must have picture of sexy women also. won’t hurt.

Who is the “Malaysian” using my nick in ShoutBox?

GilaChess, why is it possible to have 2 different “Malaysian” posting. One here and one in Shoutbox?

What I say can be provocative and I don’t want others to say things on my behalf elsewhere on the same web-site
