Some quotes from the seminar:

Endgame are full of tactics contrary to popular beliefs. No point playing an excellent opening or a great middlegame.

He also emphasises the use of computers with applications such as ChessBase, Chess Assistant and Chess Engines, Fritz etc.

Overall I feel that he has covered all the general principles to improve one’s chess skill.

Interesting was the fact that he suffered a stagnant progress where his rating was stuck at 2200 for several years. He overcame it by discovering the passion to play again, getting a foreign coach for a short while and making self annotations of his games. That effort showed an immediate 100 points.

Let’s see if I can get the permission to publish some of the seminar here later…

Also from the talk we can see that Yee Weng is a big fan of Tal (same as me!).

I feel like he made a lot of excellent points in how one could improve his chess. However, I still feel that more mention on ways one could get to 1800 elo/Class A would be a nice addition for those who haven’t reached it. A lot of players still have a lot of misconception in chess, including me, and this prevents one’s rapid chess growth. Jeremy Silman, in his preface to his excellent book Reassess Your Chess tells of a player never getting past Expert level no matter how hard he tried as his chess foundation was rotten and stuck to the same dogma he started with.

I’m also trying to improve my chess after realizing that truth will never always be beautiful, so says Lasker, and that the beautiful is never always the truth. I remember Lasker in his book, Lasker’s Manual of Chess saying that there is a tendency to keep the bulk of the chess playing public stupid, and systematical methods will guide the player achieve a respectable strength.

Right now I’m done with reading books that have proved to be over my head such as the Dvoretsky’s which is intended to help players with ratings 2200 up (based on reviews) and read more books from Silman. No more Nimzovich or Vukovic for me until I reach 1800.

Anybody who could help me point to good material
