Training with Pocket Encyclopedia of Middlegame

I have been using Pocket Middlegame by Convekta almost daily now. I have to admit that solving problems in the middlegame is much harder than solving tactics in Pocket CT-Art. There is no direct mate, a sac that wins or a nice combo that will net you a piece.

You start off by choosing exercises based on openings. I usually select at random the exercises I want to complete but of course I choose only “New exercises” as I don’t want any repeat exercises. I set the number of problems to only 4 because I use it during my daily commute to work on a train. A number more than 4 will usually result in me missing my destination and end up getting to work later than usual. 4 is the magic number. It also gives me a sense of urgency to solve the problem fast :)

For example, the above is one of the many puzzles that have me stumped. I never get the answer right on the first try. :(

Sometimes the explanation is just too brief.

My usual score. It’s always below 50%.

I guess one way to try to understand the positions and why the position is said to be better for White or Black is to actually setup the board position and play it against Fritz.

It’s something that is hard and going to require some effort on my part. So, I’m starting to screen capture some positions I want to examine later. But I’m just too lazy to setup the position and try it out yet…
