India’s youngest GM

Can you imagine being a GM at age 13 ??

Parimarjan Negi (b. 9 February 1993) is a 13-year-old chess prodigy from India. In July 2005, he became the youngest International Master ever when he earned his third and final IM norm at the Sort International open chess tournament in Sort, Spain.

In July 2006, he became the second youngest Grandmaster ever when he earned his third and final GM norm at the Chelyabinsk Region Superfinal Championship at Satka in Russia.

I think Malaysians lack of the opportunity to play in the higher level of chess competition. That’s why it took us so long to produce a GM; or even an IM.

I think the opportunity in Malaysia now is better than ever. We have the Malaysian Open and the Malaysian Chess Challenge every year now. There was also the Penang Open last year. However, I think not many people take advantage of getting more exposure.

Going overseas need not be too expensive either. There is Singapore with some internationally rated events. Of course, for more ’serious’ tournaments you need the dough or sponsors to travel further..
