Brunei gets a medal in Turin Olympiad

Ak Hirawan who played on the Board 6 performed exceptionally well by earning 6.1/2 points out of a maximum seven points to earn a silver medal.

My two cents:
Brunei maximised their chances to get medals by using the ’strategy’ of putting their weaker players on top boards while their strongest player like Ak Hirawan was reserved at 6th position. He was brought out only 7 rounds out of 13 to score points against relatively weaker players. Of course this type of board arrangement is perfectly legal but quite unsportmanly in my humble opinion.

Anyway, congratulations to our neightbour to be the only Asian country to get a medal.

The article goes on to say:

Ak Hirawan is Brunei’s current top chess player. In order to perform at a higher level, he would need to play in a competitive environment especially in Europe. Ak Hirawan is seeking generous sponsors to support his ambition to become the first Grandmaster of Brunei Darussalam.

I think they strategized well to boost the spirit of the player and perhaps to make a history that will soon be remembered as a great achievement for the country.

I doubt it’s a great achievement, more of an embarrassment. But only to those who understand the circumstances

Yeah the Malaysian can easily follow this cheap tactic and place Mas at 4th board. I’m sure we’ll come back with a medal too.

However I can imagine the uproar and response this will get from our local chess newsgroup had we done this :)

Sure it’ll give you point in that area. But it’ll affect the top boards.
