Final Round Disappointment
It was disappointing to see our Malaysian men go down 4-0 to Italy-A. That loss cost us. We fell from 41 position to 80th position in the final standing. We finished in 70th place in the last olympiad.
However let’s not allow the bad result to erase our team’s valiant fighting spiring in face of strong oppositions. We beat Canada and Switzerland. Malaysian fans were on a high after that. It showed that Malaysia has the potential internationally. I believe at the very least it has inspired the younger generations of chess players. There’s still the 2008 Olympiad!
The women finished 44th place after beating Iran 3-0. Siti will be coming home a WIM as she has met the required minimum rating. Congratulations to our women too as their results were above expectations.
Another piece of news is that Kirsan won the presidency. I was a little disappointed as I was attracted to one of Bessel’s point in one of his election speech:
We will create a professional internet presence with communications and community building. This web presence will help developing countries to find sponsors. We have to develop a FIDE web portal. Enabling direct contact between member federations to consult and create lessons.
I’m always attracted to the web as a delivery mechanism for education. To hear Bessel even talking about this possiblity for chess excites me.
I don’t know about you, but I’m charged up after the olympiad. Will be putting in more effort into the blog and my personal chess improvement.
