Malaysia round 9 games
Board 1
IM Mas vs GM Victor Korchnoi

Not the GM-stomping-out-an-IM as most people expected. This was the shortest game of all for this round as Korchnoi capitulated in 21 moves.
The game was a Ruy Lopez exchange variation where Korchnoi allowed Mas to bring his Queen to the King side and even allowed Mas to push his h-pawn all the way to h6. Korchnoi made a blunder a lost the exchange without any compensation so he resigned (graciously or with disgust?? :))
It was definitely a defining moment for the Malaysian team as the quick win on board one must have been a tremendous morale boost the rest of the team. For this round, Mas was definitely not the weak link
Board 2
GM Pelletier Yannick vs FM Mok Tze Meng
Mok saw Mas win on board 1 and Anas win on board 4. He played well in the middlegame but slowly got outplayed in the endgame with a Rook + 2 pawns vs Rook + Bishop + Pawn.
A sad loss for Mok as a draw would have put him very close to obtaining his IM norm (not to mention an overwhelming win over chess giants Switzerland!)
Board 3
FM Lim Yee Weng vs GM Gallagher Joseph
This was the last board to finish. Lim played a speculative pawn sacrifice early in the opening.
He then went for a tactic that netted him the GM’s Queen in exchange for a Rook and Bishop.
The game went into a long endgame where Black seems better for a long time until about move 60+. The GM dropped another pawn to Lim’s Queen and Lim was slightly better although not enough to win. The game ended on move 93 in a draw. This game also kept me in suspense till 2am as Malaysia was ahead 2-1 then. We needed a draw in this last game to confirm a win over Switzerland.
Board 4
IM Zueger Beat vs FM Anas
The second fastest game to end in Malaysia’s favour. Anas took advantage of Zeuger’s errorneous pawn push of e2-e4. The rest was simple tactics as Anas netted some pawns and more material at
the end of the combination. Fantastic performance by Anas which game Malaysia dream 2-0 lead of Switzerland.
