Chess vs Scrabble

Chess vs Scrabble

I was disappointed not to find Quah Seng’s Sun fortnightly chess column on Friday’s The Star LifeStyle section. Reading Quah’s chess column is always the highlight of my fortnightly Friday morning. I scanned for every page and didn’t find the Chess column.
Today, I opened the Friday paper to look at the Scrabble section to find out how come they have 2 pages again. After all, recently there was an upsurge in local chess activity the last 2 months. Scrabble must have been even more active to get 2 pages again. Ah .. another GilaChess (or rather The Star) blunder as I didn’t see that the second page was not scrabble but Chess.Someone just mistakenly placed the Scrabble section logo instead of the Chess heading (picture).
Anyway, the main news was about the Kirsan-Bessel presidency. Incidentally there is quite a number of people who voted on this page for Bessel Kok. Not surprisingly too that many do not care about the elections as they voted “No opinion”. Perhaps Malaysians think that the FIDE elections does not have any effect on local Malaysian enthusiasts?

I’m impressed, we sure don’t get regular chess features in the local papers. In some aspects, Malaysia chess scene seems more vibrant
