Nokia Gambit Strikes Again

Nokia Gambit Strikes Again

It’s the crucial final round of the Selangor Open 2006. There is an air of tension on board 4 with WCM Nur Shazwani vs Steven Retallick. Both have 5.5 points and a win will propel either one to top 5 for the prize money. Not more than half hour into the game an SMS message was heard beeping. Since SMS beeps were short it was hard to pin point the source. It turned out the Retalick forgot to turn off his phone before the game began. Being the gentleman he promptly went over to the arbiter’s table and admitted to the arbiter that he forgot to turn off his phone. That gave him automatic loss for that game!!

I guess if it was me, I would have acted dumb and pretended it was someone else’s phone :)

Shazwani later told me she didn’t even know it was Retalick phone that beeped. Anyway it was just an SMS with 2 beeps but it costed a full point for this strong player and a place in the top 5.

This means Shazwani will likely in the top 5. On board 3, FM Lim Yee Weng beat Yusof after Yusof played a wrong variation of what he prepared against Yee Weng’s Sicilian c3. Yee Weng now has 7 points. On going battle in the final round: Board 1: Anas (7 points) vs Siti (6.5 points) Board 2: Loo Swee Leong vs Tjin Hau which looks pretty even and heading for a draw..

Stay tuned for more..

The Sportmanship Award must go to Steven. He don’t mind about losing the crucial point!!!!:)

[...] Remember how Steve Retallick became a victim of the Nokia Gambit during this year’s Selangor Open? [...]
