My Rest Day
Had a nice rest. Got one lucky game from Hasidin in Round 4 with a undeserved win because my opponent gave me a free rook in the endgame. My first win in the tournament!
Round 5, I tried the Stonewall successfully but only in the opening phase. Locked out the Queenside nicely and had the potential for a good Kingside attack - every Dutch Stonewall player’s dream.
But my opponent made a slight mistake in the middlegame offering me a rare chance to open up the centre. I rarely see this in Dutch Stonewall games. Opening up the center was too soon as I was not well developed yet.
I should not have been tempted and instead keep the centre closed and concentrate on the
standard king side attack.
Of course I got punished by Loo in tactics that took place after the center was open. Loo incidentally, is a friend of Penang’s Tan Khai Boon.
Still have a lot to learn about the ideas in the Stonewall.
Will annotate and post the game here later if I have time ..
Will play round 6 and 7 tomorrow. My next round opponent is Wonder Boy Yeap Eng Cheam’s sister.
The last time I played against Yeap Khuan Yee I almost lost. Follow this blog to see the result of tomorrow morning’s encounter.
One thing that struck me in classical time control tournaments like this is that players you consider weak and can consistently beat in allegros suddenly are not so ‘beatable’ anymore. Your opponent suddenly is stronger and less likely to make blunders. The games are of course higher quality but also raises the game pressure several notches above normal.
I plan not to play in the 8th round because I want to see my parents who are in KL for this labour day. This is possible as every player can exercise the right to take at most one bye (worth half a point) in any round but with one round prior notice.
It will be a nice break and have some family time.
Hopefully I will be rested and can come back energised for the 9th and last round (that’s the plan anyway
Anybody wants to see the exciting Shazwani vs Tjin Hau and Tjin Hau vs Lim Yee Weng? If enough people post positive comments here, I may just make the effort to get the game scores, key it in and publish it here.
See you tomorrow…
