Chess to be removed from SEA games?
This morning I read a post from the Malaysian chess group pointing to an article about the possibility of chess being excluded from the 2007 SEA games. This is indeed distressing. This is the quote from Tunku Imran, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) an elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) :-
It will be a waste of resources, money and effort to host sports that do not have any bearing at major sporting events.
He did not quote chess explicitly but chess is one of the “less relevant” SEA games event together with Arnis, pentaque, water skiing, traditional boat racing.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that 2007 SEA games host, Thailand, does not axe chess from the SEA games.
